Who picks up the household trash and empties the dumpsters?

Weekly residential trash service is provided as a benefit to the residents of the City of Cleveland.  This service is contracted through Waste Connections, LLC and the service provider is responsible for the scheduling of trash pick up days.  If you have questions or concerns about your residential trash service, please contact Waste Connections at 476-2293.

Commercial trash pick up inside the City limits is under an exclusive contract with Waste Connections, LLC.  If you are a business owner in need of service, please contact Waste Connections at 476-2293.

What does the Public Works Department pick up?

Public Works picks up large items and yard debris two times per month for city residents.  (See calendar for your scheduled collection days).  Many items are picked up free of charge such as old furniture, used appliances, and moving boxes, etc.  Any debris remaining from a contractor (remodeling, tree trimming, etc.) must be removed by the contractor and will not be picked up by the Public Works Department.  We do not pick up tires, gas cans, propane tanks, concrete, or hazardous waste items such as chemicals, paint cans or medical supplies.

The Public Works Department also removes brush that has been trimmed by the homeowner (not a tree trimming service).  In ordered for your brush to be picked up it must be no more than 7” in diameter and no more than 7 feet in length.  Brush must be free of debris with no stumps or trunks included.

What is the best way to put out items for Public Works to pick up?

Items should be placed as close to the street as possible but not as to cause a traffic hazard.  The city ordinance states that items for collection may be placed to the curb as early as the evening before your scheduled removal day.

Please keep your yard waste and rubbish items in separate piles which are easily accessible with our heavy equipment (i.e. away from fences, mailboxes, wires, etc.)

Leaves (except during the months of October – February when the vacuum truck is used) and grass clippings must be bagged for removal.

Do I need to put my small rubbish and/or yard debris in a particular color garbage bag?

Yes. Any bagged debris set out by the curb for pick up needs to be in clear plastic bags. Trash set out in colored garbage bags is often mistaken for regular household garbage (which is not picked up by this department).

Can I request a vehicle to pick up large amounts of rubbish?

Yes, Public Works offers overnight or weekend use of dump trucks for removal of bulk rubbish for residents of the City of Cleveland.  The requested vehicle will be dropped at the required location between the hours of 2:00 P.M. & 3:00 P.M. and will be pick up the next business day after 7:00 A.M.  Removal of regular junk items and use of the vehicles are free of charge.
