SIGNS & MARKINGS
The Signs & Marking staff is responsible for all street markings, sign construction and maintenance of these items on all city-owned streets. This consists of fabricating all signs from raw materials, placement of street markings, and the lettering and numbering of all city department vehicles. The sign crew is responsible for setup of signs and barricades required for city road closures. Sign staff also assists the engineering division with traffic counts.
Do I get to help
decide where signs are No. Signs are placed in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control (MUTCD) and must be placed in the safest, most appropriate location.
Do the different shapes and colors of the signs mean different things? Yes. The shapes and colors are standardized as follows: Black- regulation Blue- road user services guidance, tourist information, and evacuation routes Brown- recreational and cultural interest area guidance Fluorescent Yellow-Green- pedestrian warning, bicycle warning, school bus and school warning Green- indicated movements permitted, direction guidance Orange- temporary traffic control Red- stop or prohibition White- regulation Yellow- warning
Can I get a “Children at Play” sign? These are not enforceable signs and are not installed by the City of Cleveland. If you would like to discuss possible alternatives to this sign please contact the City Traffic Department at 559-3330.
No. Signs created by the City sign shop can only be used on public right-of –way.
Does the sign department paint all the lines on the streets? A contract is awarded every year for the striping of the major streets. Painted curbs, stop bars, handicap spaces, and minor lane markings are all done by the sign division.
